AOR HEAVEN ::: N E W S L E T T E R 15/01/2010

Howdy melodic rockers,

Back to the “ordinary” business, even if it’s still hard to get out of bed after the vacations, but the biz is already on steam. The first delay in the year comes from ASTRAL DOORS, which have postponed their new cracker to 01/29, let’s keep our fingers crossed that nothing else will get postponed back.

Next week highlights includes the new LAST AUTUMN’S DREAM album, DREAM EVIL besides two classic re-issues from Yesterrock – both ROBERT TEPPER and TOM DE LUCA are much sought after classic AOR releases.

You might ask what happened to our label website metalheaven.net, which is not available since two weeks. The problem lies with the change of provider, which I thought it would be much easier, but the problem is still not solved !

Have a great week

ANGELS OF BABYLON - Kingdom Of Evil

A: 11 € B: 13 €

Welcome to the debut of the special kind: Under the flag of Angels Of Babylon run not only two newcomers – singer David Fefolt and guitarist Ethan Bush – but also the mighty ex Manowar drummer Rhino (yes – it became very quiet around his person after his departure from the “True Metal Warriors” as well as after finishing of the activities for the “The Triumph Of Steel” album in 1994; the only activities since then is Rhino’s involvement in HolyHell). Probably only a few of you know: Rhino is not only a very good drummer, he’s also a great songwriter, fantastic piano player as well as brilliant producer – what he shows very impressing with the Angels’ debut album “Kingdom Of Evil”. Because of all his great musically abilities it was easy for Rhino to convince another star to join his boat: Ex-Megadeth bass player Dave Ellefson. Musically wise the quartet offers a great piece of metal, that unites all the best elements of melodic US-Power Metal and British hard rock in one album: The dramatic opening track ‘Conspiracy Theory’ reminds on early Virgin Steele; the following ‘Apocalypse 2012’ we can understand without a doubt as the Angels’ answer to Manowar’s evergreen ‘Blood Of My Enemies’ – and the third song ‘Night Magic’ is impressing with its energetic-psychedelic vibes which are almost never heard since Black Sabbath’s “Born Again” (remember ‘Zero The Hero’). If we take the majestic ‘Tear Out My Heart’, the hot rocking ‘Oh How The Mighty Have Fallen’, the mid-tempo groover ‘Tarot’ or the orchestral title song (introduced by wonderful Spanish guitars): Every track has its own identity and is impressing with its high class standard. Hell – what a great debut!   A.S.

STATE OF ROCK - A Point Of Destiny

A: 11 € B: 13 €

Sometimes it’s easy to introduce a new band and their album. With the simple formula “75 % FRONTLINE + 25 % SHY = 100 % STATE OF ROCK” almost everything is said about this CD. Since some of you may still be interested in hearing more details, I explain that formula. The 75 % FRONTLINE come from Robby Böbel (guitars), Hutch Bauer (bass) and Rami Ali (drums), while the 25 % SHY are represented by British singer Tony Mills. “A Point Of Destiny” proves STATE OF ROCK right to name after the first FRONTLINE album of the year 1994, since their music is not very different from what FRONTLINE have done on their last albums. Overall STATE OF ROCK sound a little heavier and more dynamic, but the main ingredients are the very same: likable melodies, virtuoso guitars plus some powerful and excellently arranged songs. The biggest difference in the sound of the two bands is lead singer Tony Mills. His high-pitched vocals are not everyone’s cup of tea, but in the case of “A Point Of Destiny” it is easy to live with them, because the STATE OF ROCK songs are strong enough to absorb them. The best songs of the album are the heavily grooving “Count Me Out” which would also fit on the first EVIDENCE ONE album, the heavy and scrolled opener “Black & Blue” and the classic mid-tempo-anthem “Without My Love” of which chorus features some obvious JOURNEY influences as does the beautiful half-ballad “Don’t Make Me Cry”. The positive overall impression gets rounded off by a powerful and compact production which leaves enough space to all instruments to unfold. I highly recommend STATE OF ROCK’s “A Point Of Destiny” to the fans of FRONTLINE, SHY and early EVIDENCE ONE. Go and get it!         MARCO SPÄTH

LAST AUTUMN’S DREAM - A Touch Of Heaven

A: 12,5 € B: 15 €

Meanwhile it’s a common thing that every new year sees a new LAD album in January and “A Touch Of Heaven” makes no exception of this rule, even if things were slightly different this time after the tragic suicide of bass legend Marcel Jacobs. New kid on the block is Jamie Borger’s rhythm section partner in TREAT, Nalley Pahlsson. Together with singer Mikael Erlandsson and ex- FAIR WARNING guitarist Andy Malecek they’re continuing their winning formula of catchy Scandi AOR in the vein of their excellent previous releases like “Dreamcatcher”. The Swedish – German alliance never really disappointed their fan base and “A Touch Of Heaven” is another highlight in the LAD history.

HYBRID ICE - Mind’s Eye

A: 12,5 € B: 15 €

Good to see another rare 80s AOR outfit making a comeback big time. This time it’s the Pennsylvania/USA based band HYBRID ICE, whom released 2 albums in the 1980s, of which ‘No rules’ from 1987 is still an undiscovered pomp AOR classic. Now in 2009 the band releases a real new comeback album in the shape of ‘Mind’s Eye’. At first sight musically some slight changes to be heard, especially during the first 2 tracks, which are a bit “proggy” and the second track has a slightly Southern Rock vibe, but starting with track # 3 they do return to their roots which means classy pomp AOR of the highest order. Just listen to the killer track “Only The Lonely” and you know what I mean – pure pomp AOR bliss like AGENT, LE ROUX, 101 SOUTH and GIUFFRIA. Don’t quote this album after the first two tracks – it has much more great stuff on offer!

EDGE OF FOREVER - Another Paradise

A: 12,5 € B: 15 €

With their previous two releases “Feeding The Fire” (2004) and “Let The Demon Rock N Roll” (2005) the Italian melodic rockers put their focus promotion wise on the lead vocals of AXE singer Bob Harris, but with their third effort Bob Harris just handles the backing vocals. Keyboarder Alessandro Del Vecchio stepped in as new lead singer and he does a truly superb job. It’s extremely helpful that “Another Paradise” contains the strongest songs in the history of EOF so far, which are reminding me of the pompy melodic rock stuff from AXE, GUILD OF AGES and the mighty C.I.T.A. which massive keyboards all over the place. No doubt about it, “Another Paradise” is a clear winner for melodic rock fans.

HYBRID ICE - No Rules (digitally remastered)

A: 12,5 € B: 15 €

Like DAKOTA, HYBRID ICE hails from Pennsyvania. They released their selftitled debut in 1982, which also contained the track “Magdalene”, which BOSTON covered at their 1994 album “Walk On”. Five years later HYBRID ICE were back in action with album #2, entitled “No Rules” and here we’re talking about mega classic pomp AOR of the highest order. Think LE ROUX, TOUCH, BEAU COUP, BALANCE, BOSTON or any other classic US pomp AOR outfit from the 80s, cause HYBRID ICED played at the same league with “Nu Rules” as all those great acts, but they suffered from the poor distribution of their independent label, so they couldn’t get the same attention as all this other classics which were all on major labels. Nevertheless – this is possibly the best indie pomp AOR release ever, which is now available in digitally remastered format.

LIBERTY N’JUSTICE - Light It Up

A: 12,5 € B: 15 €

LIBERTY N’ JUSTICE is a Christian inspired project that unites some renown Hard Rock musicians. “Light It Up” features Phil Lewis (L.A. GUNS), C.J. Snare (FIREHOUSE), Ted Poley (DANGER DANGER), Kelly Keeling (BATON ROUGE), Harry Hess (HAREM SCAREM) and many more. While the previous records always featured some songs in different styles, the new record is strictly focused on classic US-Hard Rock. The best songs are the fun-rocker “Blink”, the beautiful ballad “Do What You Believe”, the cool and catchy “Man Vs. Mother Nature”, the snappy “Wrestling With God” and the highly melodic “Beautiful Decision”. Even though there are two or three fillers on the CD, “Light Is Up” is a very strong album!                  MARCO SPÄTH

IMPULSIA - Expressions

A: 12,5 € B: 15 €

Main men behind this Swedish studio project are: Marcus Jidell (Royal Hunt), who has produced the album and plays guitars, and piano, Uno Sjöström, who has co-produced and plays guitars and Johan Langquist (Ex-Candlemass), who does the male lead vocals on "Expressions", their debut album. And they have called in help from around the world to make this an exciting rock album; Robin Beck is doing the lead vocals on four tracks as well as backing vocals together with her husband James Christian (House of Lords), Tomas Broman plays drums on nine songs and the whole thing has been co-produced and engineered by Pontus Nordgren (HammerFall). We shouldn’t forgot that “Expressions” contains the last recordings from the great Marcel Jacobs before his suicide. A solid album which appears to fans of 80s Europe, Whitesnake and Robin Beck.

DARK ILLUSION - Where The Eagles Fly

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

WOW!!! That is all I can say after hearing the first song on the new album of the Swedish Melodic Metalband DARK ILLUSION. DARK ILLUSION was formed in 1982, but called it quits in 1985, was relived in 2003 with one of the best Swedish singers ever on vocals, THOMAS VIKSTROM. After an EP and CD release in the following years it become once again a little quiet, but now at the end of the 2000s decade DARK ILLUSION releases their finest work! The album ‘Where the eagles fly’ is Melodic Metal at it’s very best, fast, catchy and super melodic, thanks to of course THOMAS VIKSTROM in the first place, because he has that extra melody in his voice that lifts DARK ILLUSION way above any band in this genre, easily reaching the same high level as bands like DREAM EVIL, NOCTURNAL RITES, BLOODBOUND and HAMMERFALL.

HEAVENLY - Carpe Diem

A: 13,5 € B: 16 €

France did not forget the power metal! And the proof is Heavenly. Their fifth studio album “Carpe Diem” indeed is performed with great skills. Some songs jump straight into your brain and blossom there at first listening. All of them catch with awesome melodies, remaining choruses, many breaks and powerful guitars which gives a nice colorful diversity. In Heavenly’s fifth studio album as in their previous works we can find influences from Edguy, Stratovarius, Angra and Helloween, but the most evident is this one from Rhapsody and Gamma Ray. The big reason for this comparison is the voice of Benjamin Sotto – he sounds like Kai Hansen with alloys of Andre Matos and Tobias Sammet.

ROBERT TEPPER - No Easy Way Out (digitally remastered)

A: 14 € B: 16,5 €

Hailing from Bayonne, NJ, Robert Tepper began his career as a staff writer in New York City, eventually uniting with singer Benny Mardones, writing, and playing bass. Along with Mardones, he co-wrote the classic 'Into The Night,' which became a big hit and earned a Grammy nomination on its initial release in 1980. After parting company with Mardones, Tepper relocated to Los Angeles in the pursuit of his musical career eventually inking a deal with Scotti Brothers, this album followed being produced by award winning Joe Chicarelli (Beck, Elton John, Hanson, U2 etc). Songs like the title track (which Sylvester Stallone choosed for “Rocky IV”) or “Angel Of The City”, which appeared on the “Cobra” soundtrack are classic AOR tunes of the highest order and the album has more songs of this calibre to offer. A bonafide classic !

TOM DE LUCA - Down To The Wire +3 (digitally remastered)

A: 14 € B: 16,5 €

Not a lot is known of his history prior to and after his two-album deal with Epic, which kicked off with this release (1984), and ended with 1987's 'Captured' album. Of note, was DeLuca's assistance to Molly Hatchet on their 1984 album 'The Deed Is Done'. He must have impressed someone at MH's label Epic, because they signed him, and sent him over to England to record his debut album 'Down To The Wire' with noted British producer James Guthrie (Judas Priest, Ambrosia) at the helm. Musically, it's a bit of everything. A melting pot of Bruce Springsteen, Jude Cole, Jimmy Davis. It's a bit rough-house in places - with an edge that keeps it out of commercial reach. On other parts it's very melodic. Beyond 1987, the man has disappeared off the map. Not even a google search can help the situation. Digitally remastered re-issue through Yesterrock.

CHINA - The Very Best Of

A: 12 € B: 14,5 €

Back in the 80's CHINA were one of the most popular Hard Rock-Bands coming from Switzerland. Their album “Sign In The Sky” even entered the German album charts. Due to countless line-up changes the band couldn't keep that high level and called it a day a few years later. After the comeback last year, the guys now deliver a new best of-CD. The compilation contains 13 classic tracks plus the 3 brand new songs “Girl On My Screen”, “Stay” and “Trapped In The City”. The new songs sound very strong and judged by them the band's new studio album seems to become a great comeback record. Let's hope the guys can keep the fire burning, then they could really compete again with GOTTHARD and KROKUS.

ACACIA AVENUE - Acacia Avenue

A: 12,5 € B: 15 €

Acacia Avenue is a new band led by Danish guitarist and songwriter Torben Enevoldsen (Section A, Fatal Force) in the melodic hard rock mold and features vocals from Tony Mills (TNT, Shy), Geir Rönning (Radioactive, Prisoner), Lars Säfsund (Work Of Art) and Torben Lysholm (Pangea, Mysterell) with drums by Thomas Heintzelmann (Section A, Decoy) and bass from Carsten Neumann (Savage Affair). Home to a clean punchy production, the album is rich in catchy vocal melodies and strong songs. The style of the album is a blend of melodic hard rock and AOR. Torben spent most of 2008 writing new music with different people and some of the songs went in this direction. He then decided to pursue this particular style and ended up with around 20 songs and ultimately chose the best ones for what has become the debut Acacia Avenue album.

HUMAN TEMPLE - Murder Of Crows

A: 12,5 € B: 15 €

The Finnish melodic rock outfit HUMAN TEMPLE created quite a buzz with their debut “Insomnia” (MTM) way back in 2004, but afterwards not much happened due to some line-up changes until 2009, when they started recording the follow up. With the help of some friends like Jani Liimatainen (ex- SONATA ARCTICA, CAIN’S OFFERING), Erkka Korhonen (ex- URBAN TALE) and Vesa Virtanen (TWILIGHT GUARDIANS) “Murder Of Crows” got recorded last year and pretty much follows the paths of the debut – keyboard driven Scandi AOR in the vein of EUROPE / BAD HABIT with catchy hooks,  but even if this is a really good album it lacks in terms of real killer tunes.

IRON MASK - Shadow Of The Red Baron (limited edition)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

4 years has passed since the release of "Hordes of the Brave" and now Iron Mask is back with their third album "Shadow of the Red Baron". From start their style is still very recognizable. Main man in the band is still Dushan Petrossi - this guitar virtuoso is responsible for the song writing and production as well. Still Valhalla Jr's (Goetz Mohre) vocals appear on most of the tracks, he sounds like a combination of David Coverdale and Graham Bonnet. Like At Vance, Iron Mask delivers melodic neo-classical power metal with symphonic influences and traditional metal touches. In fact you could say that if you like At Vance, you will love Iron Mask too. New drummer Erik Stout (Reign of Terror) is of course a good match. The bass is still done by Vassili Moltchanov and new keyboardist Andreas Lindahl (Narnia/The Murder of My Sweet) completes the line-up.

DREAM EVIL - In The Night +2 (lim. edition media book)

A: 14,5 € B: 17 €

Sweden’s Dream Evil are finally back with their new studio album “In the Night”. The band demonstrates again how exciting melodic metal can still be. The opener “Immortal” starts with the epics of Running Wild and then steps into the atmosphere of Primal Fear. The voice of Nick Night strongly reminds of Ralf Scheepers. And in this well-known field goes the second song “In the Night”. In the third track we see through the principle of above mentioned influences – Judas Priest. In the fourth song things become softer – something like Edguy, Sinner. If Accept decide to make rock ‘n’ roll album it will sound like this fifth track “Electric” in the current album of Dream Evil. Awesome vocals and excellent guitar work! The guitar work is magnificent. The riffs are colossal. If you need a dose of melodic hard rock with metal touches, then this one is for you!

Despite Angel's critical acclaim, album sales were not forthcoming and the band called it a day in 1981, leaving keyboardist Gregg Giuffria to seek his musical fortunes elsewhere. He found them in 1984 after forming his own band and releasing a self titles album 'Giuffria' which reached no 26 on Billboard. It was helped in part by the single 'Call To The Heart' which reached no 15 in its own right. The album was one of the best AOR albums of 1984 and remains a favorite of the genre mainly because of Giuffria's keyboard dexterity and amazing melodic content. Album # 2 “Silk + Steel” (1986) saw the band heading to a more commercial and radio friendly AOR sound, but they still managed to write great tunes like “No Escape” or “I Must Be Dreaming”. This box set (limited to 1000 copies) contains both classics in remastered format incl. poster.
